Gut microbiota acquired during the childbirth affects the brain and mental health.

Mice offspring born by a caesarean section contains different gut microbiota compared with offspring born by natural childbirth. Different settlement of the intestine by bacteria results in changes in mental health of mice. During their life, these animals show a higher degree of anxiety and depression. Research has shown that laboratory mice showing some symptoms of autism spectrum disorders (reduced social behavior) have reduced concentrations of Bacterioides fragilis bacteria species in their intestine compared with healthy subjects. If you add this bacterial species to the food artificially, health improvement and restoration of social behavior occur in animals. The results of animal research give a promising basis for human research and draw attention to the possibility of utilizing probiotics in the treatment of various psychiatric disorders.
